Following on from my last post, and using an idea that Blue Butterfly gave me, I decided to recruit your help for a shortlist of charities our children would help us to pick from.
My current shortlist is:
Helping Humans
The Red Cross (ICRC)
Medecin Sans Frontieres
Children in Need (because CJ suggested it)
Helping Animals and/or Environment
Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF)
Greenpeace
Please suggest away...

Thanks for the suggestion MrF. The fact that I attacked a blind person once (see here) means the guilt is there, but I was rather hoping to find a charity that builds for a better future, for example by providing better schools for people in Africa. This way, the children of today can improve things for tomorrow.

How about the MS society - my landlandy has MS and it's not nice.
There is one called Toybox (http://www.toyboxcharity.org.uk/ )who help street children in South America.
A not so well know charity is DeBra (http://www.debra.org.uk/ )they work on behalf of people with a nasty skin disease.

What a fantastically difficult question. There are sooo many charities to choose from! No offence CJ but Children in Need get so much publicity it might be nice to think that other, less well known charities could benefit too. Giving must be good, even if prompted by guilt, but it is even better if it is thought-provoked and targetted as you are doing. It's your hard-earned money after all! Don't just put it somewhere which may have a bad record of honesty, for example. (Save the Children I think were guilty of this..) Put it somewhere that you WANT to put it or what you feel there is a need for - nation or world-wide...

Hey that's a good site Harple, but wouldn't it be good if the site published details on the proportion of the funds raised that were soaked up in 'admin' and that reaching the target! Difficult to evaluate I know, but I hate the thought that maybe as little as 10pence in every UKP we give actually ends up where it's needed.
I gave to Greenpeace for a LONG time, but I think they need to rethink the whole nuclear argument. It may be the best of a bad set of alternatives.

Harple is right about the children in need charity, although it doesnt invalidate it as a worthy cause.
What aobut the Ronald McDonald Charities. I know a few students that have benefited from it. A good cause
